I've seen this statement many times in news groups and on web sites,
but my testing shows that it is not correct. Simply enabling File and
Printer Sharing is sufficient to make a computer visible on the
network. There's no need to share anything.

This works even if the 98 computer isn't sharing anything. The window
for the computer opens, but it's empty. I just verified this on a
Windows 98 and Windows XP computer on my home network.

Make sure that NetBIOS is enabled on the IPX protocol on both
computers. Make sure that the IPX properties on both computers use
the same frame type and network number.
What do you mean by "does appear on the group list"? What exactly are
you seeing, and where do you see it?
Try accessing the win98 machine from XP by clicking Start | Run and
entering its name, preceded by two backslash characters:
\\computer-name
ME machine sees XP machine and can transfer files but the
opposite is not possible. XP can see can see ME in the
workgroup but cant see any shared resources although I
have ICS running the XP machine can acces the net via the
ME machine. (XP home)

Go to the computer that CAN SEE the XP computer with the sharing problem
(the Windows 98 computer) and Control Panel/Network/double-click on TCP
settings for your network card/click on Bindings tab/check the box for File
& printer sharing for Microsoft Networks/restart the computer (not necessary
to restart the XP computer or do anything to it)
In other words, the problem does not lie with the XP computer that can't
share files but with the computer that DOES share files.
Hope this helps,
Tomb Raider
At any rate, try this and see if it works. Now if you do not have File &
printer sharing as a listing in yours bindings for the network cards TCP,
someone else will have to help you get that...I don't know how to do that.
